Distributed Antenna System, (DAS)

A distributed antenna system, or DAS, is a network of spatially separated antenna nodes connected to a common source via a transport medium that provides wireless rf service within a geographic area or structure. A distributed antenna system may be deployed indoors (an iDAS) or outdoors (an oDAS).

In-Building Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) have become a critical part of both carrier cellular networks and enterprise infrastructure. But as the technology has evolved over the last 20 years it has become increasingly complex. The list of acronyms alone can be overwhelming: iDAS, oDAS, active DAS, passive DAS, hybrid DAS, off-air DAS, and over a dozen more.

In its most simplified form, a DAS has two basic components:

1 - A wireless rf signal source

A Distributed Antenna System, as the name implies, “distributes” the wireless rf signal. But it generally doesn’t generate the signal itself. A DAS needs to be fed signal from somewhere.

2 - Distribution system

Once received, the wireless rf signal must be distributed throughout the building. There are four main types of distribution systems: active (using fiber optic or ethernet cable), passive, hybrid, and digital.

Examples of use

* Airports.

* Stadiums.

* Office Buildings.

* Hospitals

* Hotels.

* Shopping Centers

* Schools.

* Any Building where wireless rf signals need to be enhanced.
